Puri Wulandari gets IAI awards Puri Wulandari hotel, Ubud, has won a special architectural award with distinguished honor from the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI).

The annual IAI awards, presented in Batam island on Tuesday, were presented to recognize the best architecture produced by Indonesian architects in residential, nonresidential, public facilities and other categories.

Designed by Bali-based Arte architectural consultants, the property explores the richness of traditional Balinese architectural styles, combined with contemporary touches.

"The designs try to re-interpret traditional Balinese architectural concepts," Ketut Arthana, Arte's principal architect explained.

In general, Balinese architectural concepts are adopted only in terms of ornaments and physical appearance and apply these elements on structures and buildings. "Many architects are not aware of the importance of the spatial aspect of Balinese architecture, which allows them to experiment and to explore this concept," he added.

"These awards are both a form of recognition and a challenge to local architects and architectural firms to work harder and to produce their best," he maintained. -- JP
