The future of Jose Mourinho at Benfica remains uncertain. This comes after the Portuguese coach admitted that his agent has been contacted by Real Madrid, regarding a possible collaboration next season.
Mourinho confirmed that this week will be a decisive moment regarding the continuation of his career. However, he stressed that he has not yet received an official offer directly from Real Madrid.
“I have to decide my future this week,” Mourinho said as quoted by ESPN.
“I have a proposal from Benfica. I don’t have a proposal from Real Madrid. At the same time, I said that to hide that there is nothing, we can’t do that, there is something, but not directly with me,” he continued.
Mourinho’s name has been mentioned as a strong candidate to replace the current Real Madrid coach, Alvaro Arbeloa. The former Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Manchester United coach is said to be on Los Blancos’ main list of targets for next season.
The 63-year-old coach is still under contract with Benfica until June 2027. However, his contract has a clause that allows both parties to end their collaboration at the end of this season.
When asked if he would be able to refuse if Real Madrid made an official offer, Mourinho chose to speak sparingly. Mourinho stressed that he still holds great respect for Benfica.
“Benfica is a big club and from the first day I arrived, I always felt honored and responsible for working for a club like Benfica. Benfica is big,” he said.
The statement was made by Mourinho after leading Benfica to close out the Portuguese Primeira Liga season without defeat. A 3-1 win over Estoril Praia in the last match ensured that Benfica went undefeated throughout the 34 matches this season.
However, 11 draws meant that Benfica only finished in third place behind FC Porto and Sporting CP. This result also meant that Benfica failed to secure a ticket to next season’s Champions League.
Mourinho admitted that the unbeaten record was his first experience throughout his coaching career.
“This unbeaten run is great. It’s the first time in my career. Even with winning eight league titles, I’ve never done it without losing,” said Mourinho.
However, he stressed that he still prefers to win the title rather than maintain an undefeated record.
“I would trade that for a championship title with two or three defeats, no doubt about it. However, it is something that reflects well. The team’s mentality, togetherness, empathy reflect that perfectly,” he added. (Z-2)
