Jordanians in alleged rape

DILI (AP): The UN police force in East Timor have arrested two Jordanians serving within its ranks following an alleged rape of a local woman in a hotel in the capital, Dili, a police spokesman said on Friday.

The arrests come just two weeks after East Timor's UN administration said it was investigating separate sexual misconduct allegations against Jordanian peacekeepers in the territory.

UN police spokesman Luis Carrilho said the two Jordanian police officers were arrested after a 27-year-old East Timorese chambermaid alleged she was detained by them in a hotel room and raped by one of them on Thursday morning.

The two officers, who were staying at the hotel, were arrested on Thursday night. They will be handed over to prosecutors later on Friday and formally charged, Carrilho said. "In East Timor, no one is above the law, even the police," he said. About 120 Jordanian police officers are serving in East Timor as part of the 1,300-strong force.
