Jordanian Figures Call for US Troops to Withdraw!
Influential figures in Jordan, ranging from politicians to academics, are calling for foreign troops to leave the country, a move widely believed to refer to United States forces. These figures are also demanding the cancellation or restriction of military agreements between Jordan and the US.
As reported by the Middle East Monitor on Friday (31/07/2026), the call was made by more than 130 political leaders, academics, cultural figures, trade unionists, and ethnic representatives in Jordan who released a joint statement last week. In the statement, the group warned that the presence of foreign troops has exposed Jordan to security, political, and economic threats, increasing the risk of the nation being dragged into a regional war that does not involve its direct interests.
“Based on our national responsibility and recognising the immense risks facing the region due to increasing military escalation, we demand the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Jordanian territory,” the joint statement read. The statement added that the presence of foreign troops in Jordan has “increased the likelihood of our country being dragged into a regional conflict, in which we are not a party.”
“Jordan is not a party to this war, and its people should not bear the consequences or pay the price for policies that do not serve their highest interests,” the statement continued.
The call follows repeated missile and drone attacks by Iran against Jordanian military facilities that house US troops. These Iranian attacks have resulted in casualties among American military personnel and damage to military assets. Such attacks have sparked a public debate regarding whether the US military presence has made Jordan a target in the escalating conflict between the US and Iran.
The figures are urging the Jordanian government to cancel security and military agreements previously reached with Washington and to submit them to the National Assembly for thorough review. The 2021 Jordan-US cooperation agreement provides broad latitude for US troops, aircraft, and military vehicles to enter and move within Jordanian territory. It also allows US forces to bring weapons and transport and store military equipment in Jordan.
At the time of its signing, critics complained that the Jordanian government approved the agreement without first submitting it to parliament for discussion. In their statement, the figures demand that Jordanian authorities prevent the use of airports, ports, military bases, and other strategic infrastructure for purposes related to the ongoing regional conflict.
“We emphasise the need to maintain the neutrality of all Jordanian strategic facilities, particularly airports, ports, military bases, and other vital facilities,” the joint statement concluded.
