Jordan Intercepts Three Iranian Missiles, No Casualties Reported
Amman (ANTARA) - Jordan’s air defences intercepted three missiles launched from Iran towards Jordanian territory on Sunday, while a fourth missile fell in a remote area in southern Jordan without causing any casualties or material damage, according to the state broadcaster Jordan Radio and Television Corporation on the social media platform X.
The Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army pledged to continue monitoring Jordanian airspace “with the highest level of readiness” and to “deal firmly with any threat” targeting the country, the broadcaster said in a series of new posts.
In an earlier post, the broadcaster said sirens had been activated in various regions of Jordan.
Meanwhile, several media reports, citing the Israeli military, said on Sunday that missiles launched from Iran towards the coastal city of Aqaba, Jordan’s southernmost city, had been identified and successfully intercepted by Israeli and Jordanian forces.
Earlier the same day, the United States Embassy in Amman issued a security alert stating that Aqaba’s airport and port had been evacuated due to a “specific and credible threat”. The embassy also urged American citizens to avoid travelling to those locations until further notice.
The embassy also updated its warning for Americans to stay away from military bases in Jordan.
However, Jordanian authorities subsequently denied the US embassy’s claim, saying both facilities were operating normally.
The latest developments come amid rising tensions in the Middle East as the United States and Iran exchange attacks. The US has carried out eight waves of strikes against targets in Iran, while Iran has responded by attacking American bases and facilities in several Gulf countries.
On Sunday, Kuwaiti authorities said a power generation and water desalination facility in the country had been attacked by Iran for the second time in two days. The Iranian attack triggered a fire and disrupted electricity production.
Bahraini authorities also stated that their air defence systems had intercepted a number of Iranian air attacks targeting the country.
