Jordan Intercepts Five Iranian Ballistic Missiles Amid Renewed Regional Tensions

Jordan’s military said it intercepted and shot down five Iranian ballistic missiles on Wednesday (29/7). It was Iran’s first regional attack in several days, following a pause in hostilities between Iran and the United States.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the attack. The IRGC described the missile strike as a response to “aggressive actions” by the United States, without providing further explanation.

“Air defences this morning dealt with five missiles coming from Iran that were targeting the kingdom’s territory,” a Jordanian military spokesperson said in a statement carried by the AFP news agency on Wednesday (29/7/2026). The spokesperson added that the missiles were successfully “intercepted and shot down”.

In a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, the IRGC said its air force had “targeted US air bases and the US Central Command centre in Jordan with several ballistic missiles”.

“As long as the threat to the Islamic Republic of Iran continues… resistance will continue,” the statement added.

The missile attack was Iran’s first against countries in the region since last Friday, when the US and the Islamic Republic halted their strikes.

The pause in fighting came after nearly two weeks in which the US launched night-time attacks on Iranian territory, whilst Tehran repeatedly fired missiles and drones at Washington’s allies in the Gulf region.

The escalation of the conflict in mid-July began after Iran attacked several ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The pause in hostilities had briefly weighed on global oil prices. Separately, US President Donald Trump had earlier stated there was a strong chance of opening negotiations with Iran to end the conflict.
