Jordan activates emergency energy plan amid gas supply disruption
Amman — Jordan’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Kharabsheh stated in a press statement that regional developments have caused a halt to the country’s natural gas imports, which are primarily required to supply electricity generation facilities.
He stated that the authorities have begun implementing an emergency plan, switching to alternative energy sources to ensure the continuity of electricity supply.
The measures include importing liquefied natural gas through state-owned floating storage and regasification units, as well as the use of diesel and heavy fuel oil as a substitute for pipeline gas. He emphasised that Jordan still maintains sufficient strategic fuel reserves.
Israel closed the Leviathan gas field on Saturday, 28 February, the main energy source for both Egypt and Jordan, following a coordinated attack by the United States and Israel against Iran, which triggered an Iranian counter-strike.
