Political communication analyst M Jamiluddin Ritonga of Esa Unggul University assessed that former President Joko Widodo’s planned nationwide tours would not easily replicate the significant political impact he achieved while in office. Jamiluddin noted that Jokowi’s political standing has changed since his presidency, with public trust reportedly declining. Jamiluddin also argued that Jokowi is no longer as influential as during his presidency. ‘Jokowi is no longer a patron but a controversial figure,’ Jamiluddin stated in a statement on Wednesday, 27 May 2026. ‘Even his most ardent supporters have grown disillusioned during his presidency. Many have now rejected and distanced themselves from Jokowi,’ he added. However, Jamiluddin acknowledged that Jokowi still retains a loyal base of supporters, though he deemed their numbers insufficient to achieve specific political objectives. Jamiluddin suggested that one of Jokowi’s political aims in touring the country is to demonstrate continued strong grassroots support across regions. He added that this would send a political signal to parties that Jokowi retains electoral influence and bargaining power at the national level. ‘This is necessary for PSI to secure seats in the House of Representatives in the upcoming legislative election,’ he said. He further noted that boosting PSI’s standing is crucial for strengthening political leverage ahead of the 2029 presidential election, including the possibility of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka running alongside President Prabowo Subianto in the next term. While the prospects are not guaranteed, Jamiluddin said Jokowi’s efforts are understandable as he seeks to maintain his political influence. ‘But it’s only an effort; it’s natural for Jokowi to try. Who knows, he might get lucky and remain a significant figure in national politics,’ he concluded. Previously reported, Jokowi stated he is now in good health and preparing to attend public invitations across regions. ‘Yes, I’ve received many invitations from regions for public appearances. I’m now healthy and will attend these invitations,’ Jokowi said.
