Jakarta, VIVA – The lawyer of Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Yakup Hasibuan, has confirmed that his client will appear in person at the defamation trial with defendants Roy Suryo and Tifauzia Tyassuma alias dr Tifa during the evidentiary stage.

Yakup said Jokowi will bring his diploma documents as evidence to answer the accusations that have been questioned throughout the trial.

“Mr Jokowi wants to attend the trial to bring his diplomas from primary school and junior high school, as well as the diplomas that have been seized (as evidence), namely his senior high school diploma and his diploma from UGM,” Yakup said after meeting Jokowi at his residence in Banjarsari, Solo, on Monday, 13 July 2026.

Yakup said the schedule of Jokowi’s appearance would follow the agenda set by the panel of judges and public prosecutors during the evidentiary stage.

“Of course it will be at the evidentiary stage. We will leave it to the panel, whether they will invite Mr Jokowi at the beginning, in the middle, or perhaps at the end of the evidentiary stage,” he said.

According to Yakup, Jokowi’s presence is a form of respect for the legal process. He said Jokowi hopes the trial will soon enter the evidentiary stage so the case can obtain legal certainty.

“To this day Mr Jokowi remains firm that he will attend. His hope is that this case is quickly tried at the evidentiary stage so he can obtain legal certainty and the case is swiftly resolved,” he said.

Regarding the pre-trial ruling on Roy Suryo’s motion, which was partially granted by the South Jakarta District Court, Yakup said Jokowi respects all ongoing legal processes.

“Yes, we received an update earlier — this pre-trial motion by Mr Roy is his second. There may be a third and so on, and Mr Jokowi of course respects the ongoing process,” he said.

“What matters to him is that this case is quickly tried at the evidentiary stage, so he can obtain legal certainty and the case is swiftly resolved, so that this case comes to an end,” he concluded.

Previously, judges at the South Jakarta District Court partially granted Roy Suryo’s pre-trial motion concerning his search, arrest, and detention. The judges emphasised that the ruling does not affect the substance of the case.

Roy subsequently filed another pre-trial motion to challenge the validity of his designation as a suspect. That pre-trial hearing was held at the South Jakarta District Court.
