Jokowi Optimistic PSI Will Gain Momentum in 2029, Claims Strategic Plans are in Place

Jakarta, VIVA – The 7th President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), has revealed that the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) is aiming for more than just securing seats in the House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the 2029 General Election. According to him, the party, which bears the elephant symbol, has prepared much larger targets, although he declined to disclose them to the public.

Jokowi made these remarks while attending the Regional Coordination Meeting (Rakorda) of the PSI Regional Leadership Council (DPD) in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Saturday, 1 August 2026. Addressing the party cadres, Jokowi urged all officials and members to work harder to introduce the party to the public. He noted that PSI’s future struggle cannot rely solely on the efforts of the central leadership but requires strength reaching down to the grassroots level.

“Our target is not just to enter Senayan (Parliament). There is a larger target we wish to achieve, but there is no need to disclose it here,” said Jokowi.

Jokowi stated that PSI has already performed the necessary calculations to penetrate parliament in the 2029 Election. He also assessed that the enthusiasm of the cadres, who crowded the Rakorda in Kupang, serves as positive capital for achieving these goals. “If the Rakorda in Kupang is as full as this, what is there to fear? What is there to worry about? It was the same in Lampung. What is there to worry about?” he remarked.

According to Jokowi, the strength of a political party is not measured solely by the number of seats in parliament. Equally important is building a robust organisational structure down to the village level. “What I am targeting is that from the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) down to the village administration, the structure is formed; this is the great strength of the Elephant Party,” he said.

During the event, Jokowi also highlighted PSI’s development in East Nusa Tenggara. He expressed appreciation for the increase in seats won by the party over the last two elections. According to Jokowi, in the 2019 Election, PSI obtained only 11 seats in the NTT DPRD. However, in the 2024 Election, that number increased to 34 seats. Observing this trend, Jokowi is optimistic that East Nusa Tenggara will become one of PSI’s primary power bases for upcoming political contests.
