Jokowi Expresses Condolences Over Death of Sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno
President Joko Widodo has conveyed condolences over the passing of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, Jenderal TNI (Retd) Try Sutrisno. “We have lost the finest son of the nation and state,” Widodo said in Solo on 2 March 2026.
Widodo prayed for the best for the late Jenderal TNI (Retd) Try Sutrisno, hoping the former Commander of the Armed Forces during General Suharto’s leadership would be granted ease and accepted into heaven by the Almighty.
Widodo stated he knew Try Sutrisno well as a figure and national leader deeply dedicated to the Republic of Indonesia. “And I knew him as someone very dedicated, simple, and firm. We have lost the finest son of the nation and state,” Widodo said plainly.
Try Sutrisno passed away at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto Hospital in Jakarta on Monday, 2 March, at approximately 06.58 Western Indonesia Time due to health complications. He was 90 years old.
President Prabowo Subianto personally led the military funeral ceremony for Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, Jenderal TNI (Retd) Try Sutrisno, at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on 2 March. TNI Commander Jenderal TNI Agus Subiyanto received the remains of the sixth Vice President for military burial.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Vice President Try Sutrisno. Visiting the bereaved family’s residence, Pramono acknowledged losing a figure of national significance and integrity.
The government designated half-mast flag ceremonies for 2-4 March 2026 as a tribute to the late sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno and declared a National Day of Mourning. The State Secretary noted that the late Vice President was an exemplar of the nation in upholding Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.
