Former Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) arrived in India on Thursday (19 February) to attend the Bloomberg New Economy Forum.

Jokowi was welcomed upon arrival by the Indonesian Ambassador to India, Ina Hagniningtyas Krisnamurthi.

Jokowi's aide-de-camp, Adjunct Commissioner Syarif Fitriansyah, said that Jokowi was scheduled to attend the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on Friday morning (20 February). The forum was set to focus on the critical issue of artificial intelligence (AI) sovereignty.

"He has arrived in India. Tomorrow morning the agenda is quite packed, beginning with a discussion on AI at The Leela Palace," Syarif said in a written statement on Thursday (19 February).

Syarif explained that the following day's agenda would be structured as a breakfast meeting discussion. He noted that the event would also be attended by prominent global figures.

"The plan is for there to be addresses from British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw," Syarif disclosed.

Syarif said the event would take place on Friday (20 February) at approximately 07:30–09:00 local time at a hotel in New Delhi, India.

"The discussion will be moderated directly by the Bloomberg team," he concluded.

Jokowi also serves on the Bloomberg New Economy advisory board and previously spoke at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore in November 2025. On that occasion, he highlighted Indonesia's digital infrastructure, including the QRIS payment system.

"When I first became president, I had a simple question: how can we build a strong economy for 280 million people? We knew there were no shortcuts, which is why we focused on the fundamentals — building roads, seaports, airports, power grids, and digital networks. Because without strong infrastructure, the economy cannot grow," Jokowi said in English on 21 November 2025.

Jokowi noted that several marketplaces had been born in Indonesia. The QRIS payment system was a particular source of pride. The system can be used by small traders through to large corporations, and QRIS is also accepted in several countries.

"Indonesia's QRIS has made digital payments easy and universal. Today, a street vendor in a small village uses the same system as a large corporation in Jakarta. And now, Indonesia is also learning how to better leverage technology and resources through downstream industrialisation initiatives and the EV battery sector. This is a step towards economic intelligence," he affirmed.
