Joint Task Force Tightens Border Surveillance, Seizes Luxury Vehicle from Malaysia

A joint task force comprising Customs, the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the National Police, and several related agencies successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a luxury Toyota Land Cruiser from Malaysia. The enforcement action took place on Friday, 19 June 2026, in the Indonesia-Malaysia border area, specifically in Langau Village, Puring Kencana District, Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan. The case came to light following intelligence received by the Enforcement and Investigation Team of the Nanga Badau Customs Office on 19 June 2026, regarding a Malaysian-plated vehicle suspected of entering through an unofficial route. As a follow-up, the joint team immediately conducted patrols and sweeps at several vulnerable points along unofficial border crossings. During the operation, officers discovered a Toyota Land Cruiser parked and abandoned at an illegal crossing point. After conducting a search and coordinating with local village officials, the owner of the vehicle could not be located, prompting officers to secure and seal the vehicle at the scene. The luxury vehicle, with an estimated value of Rp 250 million, was subsequently evacuated to the Nanga Badau Customs Office for further processing in accordance with applicable legal provisions. Head of the Nanga Badau Customs Office, Henry Imanuel Sinuraya, asserted that the modus operandi used in this case constitutes smuggling, namely bringing imported goods into the customs territory without valid documentation. He stated that the vehicle is suspected of entering through an unofficial route without a legitimate customs declaration, violating customs regulations as stipulated in Law Number 10 of 1995, as amended by Law Number 17 of 2006. Henry further emphasised that his office will continue to strengthen border surveillance through inter-agency synergy and community support. He also called for active public participation to promptly report any suspicious activities, particularly those related to customs violations. In addition to the enforcement action, the joint team conducted outreach to the residents of Langau Village, advising them not to engage in smuggling activities and explaining the legal and economic consequences of such illegal practices. The successful foiling of this smuggling attempt demonstrates the strong inter-agency cooperation in maintaining security and sovereignty at the border, while also closing loopholes for the entry of illegal goods that could harm state finances.
