Joint SAR Team Searches for Two Missing Hikers on Mount Piramid, Bondowoso

The Banyuwangi Search and Rescue (SAR) Office in East Java deployed the Jember SAR Post Rescue Team to conduct a search operation for two missing hikers on Mount Piramid, Curahdami District, Bondowoso Regency, on Tuesday (4/8/2026). The two hikers being sought have been identified as MF (51), a resident of Surabaya, and INL (35), a local guide from Bondowoso. “After receiving the report, we immediately dispatched the Jember SAR Post Rescue Team to the location to carry out a search operation together with the joint SAR elements,” said Head of the Banyuwangi SAR Office, I Made Oka Astawa, when confirmed on Tuesday. Oka explained that the team in the field is working to optimise all available resources. The sweeping process is being carried out according to the operation plan while prioritising the safety of SAR personnel, given the notoriously extreme terrain of Mount Piramid. According to Oka Astawa, the disappearance of the two hikers began on Saturday (2/8) at around 07.00 WIB. At that time, MF and INL entrusted a red motorcycle to a local resident before starting their climb to the summit of Mount Piramid. Concern arose after the pair did not return to collect the motorcycle by Tuesday (4/8). The suspicious resident then reported the incident to the authorities. Coordination with the Curahdami District leadership led to the initial suspicion that the two hikers took a wrong path or got lost during the journey. Consequently, assistance from the SAR Team was requested to conduct an intensive sweep. The SAR operation involves cross-agency collaboration, including the Jember SAR Post Rescue Team, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Indonesian National Armed Forces and Police (TNI-Polri), the Curahdami District Government, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Bondowoso, as well as various SAR potential groups and local volunteers.
