Joint SAR teams successfully recovered a resident from Banjar Pundukaha Kelod who fell into a well in Desa Bunga Mekar, Nusa Penida Subdistrict, Klungkung Regency, on Monday (25/5). The victim, identified as 36-year-old Wayan Lanang, was found deceased at the bottom of the well.

The tragedy began when the victim was reported missing since Sunday (24/5). Family members and local residents conducted initial searches but found no results until Monday morning.

A breakthrough occurred at 6:45 AM WITA on Monday when the victim’s aunt discovered his belongings—sandals and cigarettes—near the well close to his residence. “She suspected something was wrong due to the items found around the well,” said Cakra Negara, Coordinator of Nusa Penida SAR Ready Unit, in an official statement.

Residents attempted to pump out the well’s water. Once the water level dropped, the body was visible at the bottom of the approximately 4-metre-deep well. However, due to equipment limitations and terrain risks, locals requested expert assistance for the body retrieval.

Denpasar Search and Rescue Office received the report at 1 PM from the Babinsa of Bunga Mekar Village. In response, four personnel from the Nusa Penida SAR Ready Unit were immediately dispatched to the site.

The successful operation was a result of multi-agency collaboration. Cakra Negara confirmed that after recovery, the victim’s body was handed over to the family for burial.

The SAR operation concluded once the body was transferred to the family, and all involved units returned to their respective posts. (I-2)
