Joint SAR Team Evacuates Unconscious Hiker on Mount Agung, Bali

A joint search and rescue (SAR) team successfully evacuated a hiker who lost consciousness while climbing Mount Agung in Karangasem Regency, Bali, on Saturday (18/7/2026). The victim, identified as I Gusti Agung Eka Sanjaya, 45, was part of a group of eight that began their ascent from the Pura Pasar Agung starting point in Selat District around 12.00 WITA. After approximately two hours of walking, the victim suffered extreme fatigue and collapsed at an altitude of 2,200 metres above sea level. Upon receiving the report, the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office deployed personnel from the Karangasem SAR Post. To expedite the response, guides from the Pasar Agung Social Forestry Business Group (KUPS) were dispatched earlier to the victim’s coordinates. “At 15.00, the first team consisting of 25 local Pasar Agung guides moved to accelerate the evacuation,” said Karangasem Search and Rescue Post Coordinator Putu Bhayangkara. Simultaneously, nine personnel from the Karangasem SAR Post headed to the Pasar Agung Hiking Post as a support team. Around 15.30, the first team reached the victim’s position at 2,200 metres above sea level. Subsequently, at 16.40, Search and Rescue Unit (SRU) 2, comprising 15 members, followed upwards and met the first team at an altitude of 2,100 metres during the descent. The victim was evacuated whilst still unconscious. The joint SAR team finally arrived at the Pasar Agung Post around 18.00. Upon arrival, I Gusti Agung Eka Sanjaya received initial medical treatment from the Selat Community Health Centre team before being taken to the health centre by ambulance for further examination. The evacuation operation involved various combined elements, including the Karangasem Search and Rescue Post, Selat Police, local military and police community officers, the Karangasem Regional Disaster Management Agency, the Selat Fire Department, the Selat Village Health Centre, local KUPS Pasar Agung guides, Pura Pasar Agung public relations, the victim’s companions, and the local community.
