Joint Operation Seizes 13,000 Illegal Cigarettes in Morowali
Morowali Customs conducted a joint operation with several relevant agencies in Bungku Tengah and Bungku Barat subdistricts, Morowali Regency, on 7–8 October 2026. Officers seized more than 13,000 illegal cigarettes of various brands, with an estimated value of Rp20 million.
The operation involved Morowali Customs, Morowali Police, the Morowali Regency Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) and the Morowali Military Police Subdetachment. It targeted traders’ kiosks and shops as part of a joint effort to curb the circulation of illegal cigarettes and improve public compliance with excise regulations.
Muhariadi Angkat, head of the Morowali Customs Office, said the operation demonstrated cooperation to combat illegal cigarette distribution, which could potentially reduce state revenue.
“Cross-agency collaboration is an important step in improving the effectiveness of supervision and preventing the circulation of illegal cigarettes in Morowali Regency,” he said.
In addition to taking enforcement action, Morowali Customs provided retail traders with information about how to identify illegal cigarettes, the harm they cause and the legal consequences for those who continue to sell them.
The education campaign is intended to help traders make more informed choices when selecting and selling tobacco products that comply with legislation.
Retail traders found selling illegal cigarettes in sufficient quantities were subject to administrative fines under the ultimum remedium mechanism, in accordance with applicable regulations.
Morowali Customs and the relevant agencies said they were committed to strengthening supervision and cooperation to combat the circulation of illegal cigarettes.
By combining enforcement with education, the authorities hope to raise awareness among the public and businesses about excise rules, promote a healthy business climate and protect state revenue.
