Joining the Mubeng Beteng Keraton Jogja? Note the Guidelines and Prohibitions

The Hajad Kawula Dalem Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng will be held on Tuesday (16/6) evening. As the name suggests, this agenda is an initiative of the kawula, or the people, specifically by the Paguyuban Abdi Dalem Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. “This agenda is not a Hajad Dalem belonging to the Yogyakarta Keraton, but an initiative from the Abdi Dalem and the community in the spirit of supporting the keraton as a cultural centre,” explained the Chairman of the Paguyuban Abdi Dalem Karaton Yogyakarta, KRT Kusumanegara, in a written statement received by detikJogja on Monday (15/6/2026). “Socially and collectively, we carry out this Mubeng Beteng cultural walk together, uniting our feelings to undergo a shared reflection in order to welcome a better new year,” added Kanjeng Kusumanegara. Mubeng Beteng always attracts public attention because it is open to everyone. Kanjeng Kusumanegara welcomes all elements of society who wish to join the Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng agenda. As this is not an official Keraton event, there are no formal rules for the public walking around the beteng. However, Kanjeng Kusumanegara urges everyone to maintain mutual comfort, silence, order, and the solemnity of the event. “For all Abdi Dalem who will join, we suggest wearing pranakan attire and a complete kebaya,” stated Kanjeng Kusumanegara. “For the general public, you can join in free, neat, modest, and comfortable clothing; we hope you do not wear shorts,” he advised. Meanwhile, according to the official Instagram account of the Yogyakarta Special Region Culture Office, @dinaskebudayaandiy, there are no special rules for the public wishing to participate in the mubeng beteng. However, several guidelines are listed for everyone to observe. “To maintain the solemnity and smooth running of the event, all participants are expected to wear modest and neat clothing, not to bring attributes of any organisation, community, institution, or particular party, and to always maintain order and cleanliness during the activity,” read the statement in the post seen by detikJogja on Monday (15/6). The Hajad Kawula Dalem Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng is held to welcome the Javanese New Year Be 1960. The agenda begins with a macapat recitation chanting a hymn of hope for a better new year. The macapat recitation itself will start at 21.00 WIB at the Kagungan Dalem Bangsal Pancaniti Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, before the ceremonial proceedings and preparation for the departure of the Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng participants take place at the same location from 23.00 to 23.50 WIB.
