John Naisbitt to speak on next economic boom

JAKARTA (JP): John Naisbitt, the author of Megatrends and
Global Paradox, will discuss the next boom predicted for 2020 for
government decision makers, ambassadors, conglomerate owners and
top local executives at Jakarta Convention Center on June 7.

Mutia Joesoef, president of Mutiara Datta Caraka which is
organizing Naisbitt's one-day visit, said here over the weekend
that Naisbitt will appear with local economists Dorodjatun
Kuntjoro-Jakti and Achmad Fuad Afdhal.

Other local economists, such as Sjahrir, Mari Pangestu,
Djisman Simandjuntak, Rizal Ramli, Kwik Kian Gie and Laksamana
Sukardi, are expected to participate in the discussion with
Naisbitt.

On the occasion, Naisbitt will discuss his next book,
Megatrends Asia, which is to be released early next year. He will
discuss the prospects of special economic forces in Asia,
including Indonesia, Mutia said.

"I don't see ASEAN and APEC as potential trade blocs, but I
see them as building blocs," Mutia quoted Naisbitt as saying. The
author was referring to the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Naisbitt, which holds 12 honorary doctorates in the humanities
and sciences, has been a regular writer for The New York Times
and a visiting fellow at the Harvard University. In 1991-1992, he
was a visiting professor at Moscow State University.

Success

His Megatrends is one of publishing's great success stories.
It was on The New York Times' best-seller list for more than two
years. It has been a best-seller in 18 countries, including
Japan.

With Patricia Aburdene, Naisbitt co-authored the international
best-sellers Re-inventing the Corporation (1985), Megatrends 2000
(1990) and Megatrends for Women (1992). His most recent book,
Global Paradox, was published in January 1994.

"Reading Global Paradox is a kind of a required course for
executives. It is going to be part of the standard etiquette in
business gatherings," Djisman Simandjuntak wrote in his comments
on the book.

Mutia said her company will use the topic of Naisbitt's
presentation as the title of a reference book about Indonesia,
The Next Boom 2020, which will be released by the end of this
year.

Vikki Bothwell, one of the editors of the book, said the book,
which will be printed in five languages -- English, French,
German, Japanese and Chinese -- will give highlights of
Indonesia's potential for investment.

"We want to portray the real nature of Indonesia's potential,"
Bothwell said, adding that her team currently has finished almost
70 percent of the required data collecting and editing.

Mutia noted that the first edition of the book will be
released in four cities -- New York, London, Hong Kong and Osaka.
