John Herdman confirms Indonesia national team will field fully domestic squad for AFF Cup 2026
Indonesia’s national team will field a fully domestic squad for the AFF Cup 2026, scheduled for next July. Coach John Herdman explained the reasoning behind the decision.
According to Herdman, the move is part of a long-term strategy to develop local talent while avoiding disruptions to the careers of diaspora players currently competing in European clubs during the July-August season.
“Yes, it will be our local players, our domestic players,” Herdman said during training at Madya Stadium in Jakarta on Saturday (30 May).
The choice reflects Herdman’s commitment to sustainable Indonesian domestic football. By focusing on local players, he can allocate time and resources to build a long-term foundation while giving Indonesia-based players the chance to showcase their abilities on the international stage.
Herdman’s reliance on domestic players for the AFF Cup also allows him to establish a consistent and cohesive tactical identity without having to adapt to diaspora players who may have different playing styles.
By providing international playing opportunities to domestic players, Herdman aims to create a competitive environment where local players feel valued and have clear career prospects.
This is expected to boost motivation and dedication among players during intensive training programmes.
Furthermore, the strategy aligns with Herdman’s long-term development philosophy since the start of his tenure. (H-4)
Meanwhile, ahead of the two matches, Herdman has named 44 players in the provisional squad.
He also revealed he has spoken with 16 diaspora players since taking charge of the Garuda team in January.
Regarding Mozambique, Herdman added that the East African nation could be a surprise package.
He stated Indonesia must shift away from relying solely on a pure striker or number 9.
Herdman cited Steven Vitória as an example, who led Canada’s squad at the 2022 World Cup.
