Johar Market Area Continues Development as Semarang Trade Centre
Semarang (ANTARA) - The Semarang City Government is continuing to develop the Johar Market area as a trade centre for the city, as well as a space for community activities, one of which is by opening the New PM (Pasar Maling) area within the Johar Market complex.
Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti, in Semarang on Tuesday, expressed hope that the presence of New PM would increase the crowd and provide a new space for traders. The term ‘Pasar Maling’ in the Johar Market area refers to the informal public term for a market or stalls selling used goods, antiques, or heavily discounted items, not a market for stolen goods.
‘We hope this will add more traders and liveliness. I want Pasar Johar to be bustling with various activities, not just trading, but also arts, sports, and other events,’ she said.
‘Now is the online era. Many have left Pasar Johar because they sell online. Therefore, the market must adapt to customer needs,’ she added.
She assessed that the New PM area has the potential to be developed into a more creative space combined with arts and cultural activities, training, and a centre for typical Semarang cuisine, in addition to trading activities. She also revealed plans to utilise the empty space on the upper floors of the building as a rotating showcase for micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) products.
