Jogja Last Friday Night Ride Permitted to Enter Malioboro
The Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) Government and the Yogyakarta City Government have stressed that there is no prohibition against the mass cycling event Jogja Last Friday Ride (JLFR). The event, held every Friday on the last week of each month, is also permitted to enter the Malioboro area. A statement on the official DIY Government website said the JLFR event is welcome to continue as usual without any restrictions on participants.
Head of the DIY Transportation Agency (Dishub), Chrestina Erni Widyastuti, stated that there is no policy from the regional or city government banning cycling activities in the Malioboro area, including JLFR. According to her, all road users have equal rights to utilise the iconic Yogyakarta street. Erni explained that this clarification was made in response to public concern and circulating rumours regarding a full ban on cycling in the Malioboro area. The rumours emerged following the management of JLFR participants on Jalan Malioboro on Friday, 26 June. It was noted that the restriction on cyclist activity at that time was implemented to maintain smooth and orderly traffic during the school holiday period.
“So, if the assumption is that we are banning it, that is not true, because everyone has the same rights. But it is about how we can also give rights to other road users, those who are not cycling. Everyone must share the space and respect each other,” Erni said after attending a Cross-Agency Coordination Meeting regarding the JLFR event at Yogyakarta City Hall on Monday, 20 July 2026. Erni emphasised that orderliness and mutual respect from JLFR cyclists are important because Jalan Malioboro has limited space. Therefore, if cyclists fill the entire road, it is feared they could disrupt other road users, especially given that JLFR participants number in the thousands. Erni expressed hope that JLFR participants at the end of this month would grant equal rights to other road users who are not on bicycles. She also urged that JLFR be conducted in an orderly manner while still observing traffic regulations. “Do not disobey. If one gets stuck, everything will become crowded,” Erni said.
Yogyakarta Mayor Hasto Wardoyo also confirmed there would be no excessive security scheme from his ranks in overseeing the JLFR event on 31 July 2026. “The city government together with the Regional Leadership Communication Forum accepts the JLFR event well. There is no problem, no ban, no special security scheme, none of that. What is clear is that we will be more present to accompany them, to accompany them,” Hasto said. Regarding the movement and routes of participants, Hasto said the groups of cyclists joining JLFR can enter the centre of Yogyakarta City from various directions. There are no restrictions on entry routes for participants coming from surrounding areas. He also confirmed that the core area of the Philosophical Axis, including Malioboro, remains open and can be traversed by cyclists as usual. Hasto explained that participants can enter the city from various areas, such as Bantul, Kulon Progo, Sleman, and the eastern parts of Yogyakarta. “I think all routes can be used to enter, and Malioboro is open, the point is it is open,” Hasto stressed.
