`Jockeys' caught in the act

SEMARANG: Diponegoro University has caught eight people performing the entrance test for the state school on the behalf of applicants.

A committee overseeing the test said the eight "jockeys", as they are popularly called, were caught among the hundreds of people who were taking tests on Tuesday.

Rector Muladi vowed to combat cheating. "It must be eliminated because universities don't need people who cheat."

Jockeys, mostly university students, are paid handsomely for their efforts. One estimate put their fee at between Rp 800,000 and Rp 1 million. Their operation is coordinated by a syndicate.

The eight suspects have been referred to the police. (wah/11)
