Manado (ANTARA) - The National Health Insurance Programme (JKN) accompanies and funds a cervical cancer patient in Halmahera Tengah through 35 radiotherapy sessions to treat her illness. The patient, Nurbaya, directly felt the importance of being a BPJS Kesehatan member. The woman from Halmahera Tengah was greatly aided by the JKN Programme, as all her medical costs are fully covered or free. “August 2025 was the hardest moment for me and my family when I was diagnosed with stage 2B cervical cancer at RSUD Weda,” Nurbaya said in Ternate on Saturday. Fortunately, as a JKN participant whose contributions are subsidised by the Halmahera Tengah Regency Government, she does not have to worry about bureaucratic barriers in obtaining medicines, because she was immediately given a multi-tiered referral for further treatment. “I initially often felt pain that disrupted my daily activities. When examined at RSUD Weda, the doctor said I had stage 2B cervical cancer. Therefore I had to be referred directly to Makassar (South Sulawesi) for further treatment,” Nurbaya said. From the repeat check, the cancer cells were found to have spread to the tissues around the cervix, but fortunately had not yet reached the pelvic wall or lower vagina. As a solution, the doctor recommended radiotherapy, which she must undergo regularly. She needs to undergo 35 radiotherapy sessions at RSUP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar. During treatment there, she said the service was prompt, friendly, and genuinely suited to her needs. All processes ran smoothly without any complicated administrative barriers. “There were around 35 radiotherapy sessions, and thankfully the service was excellent. From registration, doctor consultations, to being given medicines, everything was quick and hassle-free. Most importantly, there were no additional costs at all,” said Nurbaya. “I am very grateful there is the JKN Programme. All my treatment is free; I pay not a penny. JKN really helps ordinary people like me who have to travel back and forth to hospital for treatment,” Nurbaya added. For her, JKN has become a lifeline and a new hope, especially for patients fighting serious illnesses. “Thanks to BPJS Kesehatan. I only hope this programme continues and brings benefits to us all,” she added. Ultimately, the gotong royong principle of JKN, whereby the healthy help the sick, has proven to spare the public from worrying about treatment costs. Nurbaya’s story is one of many examples of how lightened the burden can be when health is fully insured. Provided the membership status remains active, access to quality health facilities is guaranteed.
