JK States 90% of Jakarta Fires Caused by Electrical Issues: Preventable
The Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), Jusuf Kalla (JK), has stated that the majority of fires in Jakarta are caused by electrical problems. According to him, these conditions can be prevented by increasing discipline in the use of electricity.
JK made these remarks while attending the inauguration of the PMI DKI Jakarta building on Thursday (17/09/2026). JK noted that around 90 per cent of fires in Jakarta are caused by electricity.
“Regarding fires, we have also discussed with the Governor that 90 per cent of fires in Jakarta are due to electricity,” said JK.
JK explained that electrical fires can occur due to negligence, incorrect installation, and excessive electrical load usage.
“Why does this happen? Negligence. Human error. A subscription for 300 or 400 [units] is used at 500 or 600. It is overloaded. Consequently, it overheats and eventually catches fire. Or incorrect installation,” he said.
According to JK, prevention efforts can be achieved through education and public discipline regarding electricity usage. He believes that fire rates can be suppressed if the community becomes more disciplined.
“How can 90 per cent be prevented? Through learning and discipline,” he noted.
JK also highlighted that fire locations, in his view, frequently occur in low-income residential areas. He stated that fires can exacerbate the economic conditions of the affected residents.
“And let us not forget, 90 per cent of fires occur in impoverished areas. They are in housing developments for those who cannot afford it,” he revealed.
“Because fires always occur in villages (perkampungan). There are also large buildings, but 90 per cent are in residential villages,” he added.
Consequently, JK mentioned that the PMI, together with the Jakarta Provincial Government, will push for fire prevention efforts. PMI volunteers will subsequently be provided with education regarding electrical safety.
“We have agreed with the Governor to mobilise firefighters, the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), electronics students across Jakarta, and PLN (the state electricity company) to promote electrical discipline,” he explained.
JK estimates that discipline in electricity usage could lead to a decrease in fire rates.
“I am confident that if there is electrical discipline, 50 per cent of fires could be reduced,” he said.
