Former Indonesian vice presidents Jusuf Kalla, also known as JK, believes that efforts to reconcile or mediate between the United States-Israel bloc and Iran, who are currently in conflict, are not easy. JK appreciates President Prabowo Subianto’s offer to mediate the conflict. However, in his view, the party to be approached is the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

“I think the good intention is there, but if you want to reconcile in war like this it is not easy. The one who should be engaged, visited, is Trump, because he is attacking,” JK said at the Kampus Mosque of UGM, Sleman, DI Yogyakarta, on Thursday night (5/3).

JK argued that it would be better if the Board of Peace (BOP), the body formed by Trump that includes the US, Israel and Indonesia, became a vehicle for peace.

“How to use the Board of Peace to become peace. So the Indonesian government should request that it be used by the Board of Peace for peace,” he said.

JK attended together with former presidents and vice presidents up to former Foreign Ministers who met with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (3/3).

“Yes (we discussed) how the country is, explained how the country’s policy is,” JK said about the meeting’s contents.

According to JK, the evolving global geopolitical situation, including the Iran situation, was raised during the meeting.

“Yes, of course, we hope to show sympathy to Iran,” he said.

Earlier, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said President Prabowo Subianto expressed readiness to facilitate dialogue amid tense and inflamed conditions in the Middle East following US and Israel’s attacks on Iran. Prabowo even said he is prepared to depart for Tehran, Iran.

“The Government of Indonesia, in this case the President of the Republic of Indonesia, expresses readiness to facilitate dialogue for the creation of conducive security conditions and if both sides consent, the President of Indonesia is willing to travel to Tehran to mediate,” quoted from the X account @Kemenlu_RI, Saturday (28/2).
