JK Pays Respects at Condolence House, Recalls Ryamizard's Key Role in Aceh Tsunami Response
Indonesia’s 10th and 12th Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) visited the condolence house of former Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java, recalling his crucial role during the Aceh tsunami response.
“To Allah we belong and to Him we return. We have come to pay our respects to the late General Ryamizard Ryacudu. He was an outstanding senior officer with remarkable achievements and a distinguished military background,” JK told reporters after the visit on Sunday, 31 May 2026.
JK recalled his good relationship with Ryamizard, particularly during the Aceh peace process where he provided significant assistance, as well as during the tsunami response and other efforts to resolve Aceh’s situation. He also served as Defence Minister at the time.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto also attended the condolence visit, remembering Ryamizard’s push for civilian involvement in national defence.
“To Allah we belong and to Him we return. I offer my condolences on the passing of Brother Ryamizard Ryacudu. He was part of the cabinet from 2014 to 2019. What I always remember is his promotion of civilian participation in national defence,” Airlangga said.
“This was one of his notable policies at the time. Of course, Brother Ryamizard Ryacudu was a military nationalist. We all mourn his loss, and he was a good person,” he added.
