JJS Builds Retaining Wall to Protect Citaman Spring in Final Stage of Package 3
PT Jasamarga Japek Selatan (JJS) is building a retaining wall to protect the Citaman spring in Karawang Regency, West Java, marking the final stage of the third package of the toll road project. Package 3 is the longest section of the Jakarta-Cikampek (Japek) South Toll Road, stretching 31.25 kilometres from Sukabungah, Bekasi Regency to Sadang, Purwakarta, half of the total 62-kilometre project connecting Jati Asih, Bekasi City to Sadang. As of the first week of June 2026, progress has reached 95 percent. The roadway itself is finished, with only some finishing works remaining, including the retaining wall which is part of the five percent of work currently being completed, said Package 3 Project Manager Shibgatullah Mahmuda on Friday. The construction of the retaining wall was previously proposed by residents of Kampung Citaman, Tamansari Village, Pangkalan District, Karawang Regency. Without a retaining wall, residents feared soil shifting would impact the environment, including the Citaman spring they use daily, he said. The company accepted the residents’ proposal even though the retaining wall construction was already included in the work plan. Of the four retaining walls being built, three are already complete. One retaining wall functioning to protect the Citaman spring remains under construction. The eight-metre-high infrastructure is targeted for completion by the end of this year. The retaining wall has four sides, A, B, C, and D, at eight metres high. Sides B, C, and D are finished. Side A is currently under construction, he said. The company has also completed the installation of four giant box culverts measuring 8x6 metres each at the site, replacing the original bridge plan that was feared to damage the surrounding environment, particularly the spring. Initially a bridge was recommended, but we reviewed it further. Building a bridge risked cutting off the spring due to drilling, and mud material could contaminate the spring, so we changed it. The construction of the retaining wall and box culverts also had approval from relevant agencies and the BBWS, he said. Besides the spring, residents also worried about the toll road’s impact on other aspects, including rice fields. Shibgatullah invited residents to voice their aspirations to the on-site contractor. The company has asked the contractor to continue coordinating with residents. Because the work contract clause states the contractor must handle occurring impacts. Residents are welcome to convey their concerns to the contractor. We also encourage the contractor to keep coordinating with residents, he said. The Japek Selatan Toll Road Package 3 section has already largely been completed. During the Eid homecoming season in recent years, this section was opened functionally to reduce congestion, especially from Bandung towards Jakarta. Besides completing Package 3, work on Package 2, Sukabungah-Setu at 22.1 kilometres including the Burangkeng Interchange connecting to the JORR 2 Toll Road, and Package 1, Setu-Jati Asih at 9.3 kilometres, is also being accelerated.
