JIS to perform 'The Nutcracker'

JAKARTA (JP): High school students from Jakarta International School (JIS) will stage their own version of The Nutcracker, a fairy tale set in 19th century Germany during Christmas.

It will be performed at the Cilandak campus, South Jakarta at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the school said in a release yesterday.

The E.T.A. Hoffmann tale is about a young girl, Clara, who rescues her godfather's nephew who has been transformed into a nutcracker doll. It was first performed in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892.

"The Nutcracker is festive and magical," JIS dance teacher Marianne Ariyanto said.

"I thought of The Nutcracker as a way of bringing dancers from the different disciplines together to perform for an audience of JIS students as well as the larger Jakarta community," she said.

The school's version will follow the original storyline which is told through pantomime, acting and dance.

Tickets are available at JIS for Rp 15,000 if paid in advance and Rp 20,000 at the door. (bsr)
