JIS Megastructure Innovation Wins WEGE a Global Award
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — PT Wijaya Karya Bangunan Gedung Tbk (WEGE) has won a global award at the prestigious 2026 Year in Infrastructure (YII) Awards, organised by Bentley Systems.
The award, in the Structural Engineering category, recognised the construction of Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), particularly its engineering achievement in the “Engineering Largest Retractable Roof” nomination.
WEGE’s innovation emerged as the winner after rigorous judging, beating more than 300 construction project nominations from 53 countries.
“This award recognises WEGE’s ability to integrate engineering, digital technology and construction execution to address the complex challenges of a megastructure. For us, JIS is not just about completing a project; it also demonstrates that Indonesian engineering capabilities can compete globally,” WEGE President Director Mahendra Vijaya said in a written statement on Thursday (8 October 2026).
JIS is a football stadium with a capacity of 82,000, making it one of the largest in ASEAN. The project’s main challenge was developing a stadium roof spanning 269 by 244 metres and equipped with a retractable system.
One of the project’s most crucial engineering achievements was lifting the 3,900-tonne roof structure simultaneously to a height of 70 metres, at a site on Jakarta’s northern coast with soft ground and a high water table.
WEGE Operations Director Tomo Dwi Hasputro, who previously served as JIS project manager, said the retractable roof system has a 300-tonne moving section covering an opening of 4,560 square metres. It can open or close in about 30 minutes.
“The challenge required precise engineering planning and very close construction coordination,” he said.
During construction, WEGE used Bentley’s digital ecosystem, including STAAD Pro for structural analysis and SYNCHRO 4D for construction simulation. The technology helped optimise lifting loads by 7%, resolve more than 100 spatial clashes before physical construction began, and complete the megastructure three months ahead of schedule.
Beyond its structural achievements, JIS’s environmentally conscious design made it the first stadium to receive a Platinum Green Building Certificate. The comprehensive use of digital engineering saved 753,000 work hours, reduced estimated annual carbon emissions by 2,300 tonnes of CO2, and kept construction material waste below 7%.
Precise planning and strict safety protocols also enabled the project to receive a Zero Accident award, after recording 2.5 million safe working hours during construction.
“WEGE’s success at the 2026 YII Awards demonstrates the company’s position as a pioneer of digital construction excellence in Indonesia, with sustainability as a top priority. Through an integrated digitalisation ecosystem, WEGE continues to innovate and deliver future green infrastructure and building solutions that are low-carbon, efficient, and beneficial to environmental conservation and the wellbeing of society,” he concluded.
