Jimly Proposes Prabowo Suspend BoP Membership

Jimly Asshiddiqie, chairman of the Advisory Council of the Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI), has urged the government to delay obligations in the Board of Peace (BoP). The proposal to suspend membership in the international body founded by United States President Donald Trump comes in the wake of the joint attack by Israel and the US on Iran. Jimly said there were two things that would make Donald Trump very happy with Indonesia. ‘I think two things make Donald Trump very pleased with Indonesia, namely that we can reduce it by half. For example, with BoP, we would suspend our membership obligations until two things,’ he said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, 5 March 2026. The first is that Indonesia should postpone its BoP membership obligations until the war between the US–Israel and Iran subsides. Jimly noted that the sudden, unilateral attack by the US together with Israel on Iran has led the public to associate the body formed by President Trump with power rather than peace. In addition, Indonesia should suspend obligations until there is recognition of Palestine’s independence. ‘The second, until there is certainty about a timetable for Israel’s recognition of Palestine’s independence. Once there is certainty, we would resume our activities. That is my suggestion,’ said the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court. Nevertheless, Jimly did not call for Indonesia to withdraw from the BoP. ‘We will remain there. After all, Donald Trump already likes us. Alhamdulillah. But from these two points, we would halve our participation, i.e., suspend it,’ he said.
