Jimly Proposes Indonesia Suspends Board of Peace Membership Until the US–Israel–Iran Conflict Abates
Jimly Asshiddiqie, the Chair of the Advisory Board of the Ikatan Cendekiawan Muslim se-Indonesia, has proposed that the government suspend Indonesia’s obligation to membership in the Board of Peace (BoP) or the Peace Council. The proposal was made after the United States, together with Israel, attacked Iran. The escalation of the conflict between those countries has continued to intensify. Jimly acknowledged that Indonesia’s involvement in the BoP has had a positive impact on the relationship between Indonesia and the United States. This is evidenced by the cooperation signed between Indonesia and the US. “Well, so I think there are two things that have made Donald Trump very happy with Indonesia’s role. First, the BoP that has existed for some time, and second, the tariffs,” Jimly told reporters at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, 5 March 2026. Nevertheless, Jimly highlighted public perception of the Board of Peace, which is considered to have shifted after the joint attacks on Iran. “Well, I think it would be wise after this war, because many people associate that this is not a board of peace, but a board of power,” he said. With this change in perception, Jimly proposed that the government suspend Indonesia’s BoP membership obligations until two conditions are met. One condition, Jimly said, is that the war between the US–Israel and Iran subsides. “First, until the Iran–America and Israel war subsides. Second, until there is certainty about a timetable for recognising Israel’s independence. Once there is certainty, we will be active again. My suggestion is as such,” concluded Jimly.
