Jimly Asshiddiqie Appointed to Ombudsman's Ethics Council, Here Are Its Duties
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Former Constitutional Court (MK) Chief Justice for the 2003-2008 period, Jimly Asshiddiqie, has revealed that he has been called by the Ombudsman to serve as one of the members of the Ethics Council to further examine code of ethics violations committed by the Ombudsman Chairman for the 2026-2031 period, Hery Susanto.
“Today, we three, plus two from within the Ombudsman, have been asked to form the Ethics Council to examine and decide on matters related to the alleged code of ethics violations committed by the Ombudsman Chairman for the 2026-2031 period,” Jimly said during a press conference on Friday (8/5/2026).
Jimly continued that the reason the Ombudsman included three external figures is to maintain the institution’s independence during the upcoming examination.
“Usually, to maintain independence, there are more external elements, and of course, figures who already have an interest in the Ombudsman, so now we are five in total, three from outside and two from inside,” Jimly added.
The two Ethics Council members from the Ombudsman’s ranks ensure that the code of ethics violation examination process runs according to procedure.
“The importance of internal elements is because this concerns internal matters and examinations, especially those involving public interest,” he explained.
In addition, the Ethics Council will also hear inputs from Ombudsman members and related parties to ensure the examination process runs smoothly.
“We will also hear from various relevant parties as necessary, including from the Ombudsman members themselves and related parties,” he clarified.
Jimly hopes that this examination can be completed within 30 days, so that public trust in the Ombudsman can be restored.
“Hopefully, this examination is completed within 30 days, hopefully in line with the given target,” he concluded.
For information, today the Ombudsman officially formed the Ethics Council to address the code of ethics violations by Hery Susanto, while also restoring public trust in the Ombudsman.
There are three people on the Ombudsman’s Ethics Council from external figures, namely Jimly, then former Supreme Court (MA) Chief Justice for the 2001-2008 period, Bagir Manan, and Principal Political Researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Siti Zuhro.
In addition to the three members from external figures, there are two people who are Ombudsman members for the 2026-2031 period, namely Partono and Maneger Nasution.
Previously, the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) designated the Indonesian Ombudsman Chairman for the 2026-2031 period, Hery Susanto, as a suspect in the Criminal Act of Corruption (Tipikor) case regarding nickel mining business governance from 2013 to 2025.
