JI put on UN's al-Qaeda blacklist
The United Nations has added Jamaah Islamiyah, suspected of a
role in the Bali bombing that killed at least 190 people, to its
al-Qaeda blacklist.
The UN's website said the group had been put on its list of
organizations subject to sanctions against al-Qaeda and Taliban
operatives.
As a result of the listing, UN member nations are required to
act against JI members and entities by freezing their assets,
preventing their movement and blocking any attempts to sell or
transfer arms.
The United States and Britain have already named JI as a
"foreign terrorist organization" following the Oct. 12 bombings
in Indonesia's Bali island.
Australia and Indonesia had requested the UN blacklist JI.
The sanctions were originally adopted, and later tightened, in
response to the indictment of Osama bin Laden for the 1998
terrorist bombings of U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam
