Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trading activity at the Jakarta Futures Exchange (JFX) throughout May 2026 has demonstrated an increasing diversity of instruments being utilised by market participants.

JFX President Director Yazid Kanca Surya stated that these instruments range from strategic domestic commodities and digital investment instruments to access to global markets. “This development reflects the growing use of the exchange as a means for transactions, price discovery, and risk management to meet various market needs,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

A primary highlight at the JFX throughout May 2026 was the trading activity of olein. Following a gradual increase over several weeks, the transaction volume of this palm oil derivative surged by 267.75 per cent in the third week of May compared to the previous week, reaching 37,437 lots. During the same period, the transaction value also rose by 338.73 per cent to Rp3.83 trillion. Cumulatively, from 26 April to 23 May 2026, olein transaction volume reached 70,246 lots with a transaction value of Rp6.48 trillion. This growth established olein as one of the commodities with the most prominent increase in trading activity on the JFX during May.

Yazid noted that the increase in transaction activity indicates growing attention from market participants towards commodities closely linked to industrial and commercial activities. He added that the vegetable oil market is highly dynamic, influenced by various factors including production developments in major producing countries, changes in industrial demand, and price movements of substitute commodities such as soybean oil. “These conditions prompt market participants to become increasingly active in using futures trading to obtain price references and manage business risks,” he said.

According to Yazid, the rise in olein trading activity demonstrates that the function of futures trading is becoming increasingly relevant in supporting the needs of businesses directly related to commodities. Beyond the growth in olein transactions, JFX trading activity in May also showed that market participants are utilising various available instruments according to their specific needs. Some participants use commodity-based instruments for risk management, while others utilise instruments providing access to international markets or digital investment instruments.

The Overseas Mandate Delivery Instrument (PALN) remained the largest contributor to JFX trading activity between 26 April and 23 May 2026, with a transaction volume of 5.02 million lots and a value of Rp229.35 trillion. According to Yazid, the scale of PALN transactions indicates high interest among market participants in accessing various global investment instruments through mechanisms under the supervision of Indonesian regulators. “The presence of these instruments provides an alternative for market participants wishing to gain exposure to various products traded in international markets without having to access them directly abroad,” he said.

On the other hand, digital gold transactions also recorded positive development. During the same period, transaction volume reached 33,797 transactions with a transaction value of Rp87.45 billion. This activity shows that gold remains a preferred instrument for the public, particularly due to its easy-to-understand characteristics and increasing accessibility via digital platforms. The development in digital gold also indicates rising participation of retail investors within the trading ecosystem. Ease of access, flexibility in transaction amounts, and increasing public literacy regarding digital-based investment instruments are factors driving growth in this segment.

Meanwhile, in the bilateral trading segment, transaction volume was recorded at 576,567 lots with a transaction value of Rp3.78 trillion. According to Yazid, this activity demonstrates that the various trading segments available at the JFX continue to be utilised by market participants in accordance with their respective transaction characteristics and needs.
