Jewish Temple Ambitions at Al-Aqsa: A Threat to the Status Quo and Regional Stability

Tensions in Jerusalem have reached boiling point again amid escalating rhetoric from right-wing nationalist Israeli figures who are openly challenging the international legal order at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Radical politician Moshe Feiglin recently made provocative statements regarding plans to build a Jewish temple at the site, which for the last 1,400 years has been one of the holiest sites for Muslims.

“The entire land of Israel was promised to the children of God and it is here that we will build a new Temple for all of humanity to come and pray together,” Feiglin said after conducting worship and singing religious songs at the compound with a group of his followers.

Feiglin’s actions and those of his group constitute a direct violation of the status quo agreement, a decades-old understanding that stipulates the management of the Al-Aqsa compound—known to Muslims as Al-Haram al-Sharif and to Jews as the Temple Mount—falls under the authority of the Jordanian-administered Waqf. Under these rules, non-Muslims are permitted to visit the 35-hectare site but are strictly prohibited from performing religious rituals or praying there. Even the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and most ultra-Orthodox rabbis forbid Jewish prayer at the site based on halakhic law.

International concern has grown following a Middle East Eye report citing efforts by Israeli and US officials to transform Al-Aqsa’s status into a multi-faith centre. Although US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated he was unaware of the report, the appointment of figures like Mike Huckabee as US ambassador to Israel—known for supporting Jewish claims over the holy site—reinforces suspicions of a policy shift. Dr. Mustafa Abu Sway, Deputy Chairman of the Islamic Waqf Council, warned that altering the status quo is tantamount to opening a Pandora’s box that could trigger a new explosion of violence in the region.

Beyond Feiglin, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has also continued to push the boundaries of the agreement. In a recent video, Ben Gvir was seen leading a nationalist march in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City while shouting claims of ownership over the Temple Mount. Ben Gvir has used his ministerial position to permit Jewish prayers in certain parts of the compound, a step seen as the beginning of a gradual Israeli takeover of East Jerusalem, which was illegally annexed under international law.

The current situation reminds many of the events of September 2000, when Ariel Sharon’s provocative visit to Al-Aqsa sparked the Second Intifada. That conflict lasted five years and claimed more than 4,000 lives. With mounting pressure from nationalist groups to alter the governance of the world’s most sensitive piece of real estate, the international community, including Jordan, Egypt, and the United Kingdom, continues to urge that the historic agreement in Jerusalem be respected to prevent a larger humanitarian disaster.
