Jetstar to Charge Up to Rp551,000 for Overhead Cabin Baggage from 2027
Low-cost carrier Jetstar will impose additional fees on passengers wishing to store cabin bags in the overhead compartment from 2 February 2027. The new policy is part of changes to cabin baggage rules the airline claims will speed up boarding and reduce flight delays.
Under the policy, passengers may still bring one small bag that fits under the seat — such as a backpack, handbag, or laptop bag — at no extra charge. However, passengers carrying larger bags for the overhead compartment must pay between A$25 and A$52 per flight, depending on the route. At current exchange rates, these charges equate to approximately Rp265,000 to Rp551,000.
Passengers requiring additional cabin baggage can purchase the Priority Carry-on service, which includes the right to bring a larger bag into the overhead compartment, earlier boarding access, and the removal of the previous 7-kilogram cabin baggage weight limit.
Jetstar said the policy change followed research with customers and cabin crew. The findings indicated that baggage weight checks at the departure gate and competition for overhead compartment space were among the leading causes of passenger stress at airports.
“We are giving customers the choice to bring a bag under the seat with the option to add Priority Carry-on. This way, we can use overhead compartment space more efficiently, speed up boarding, and help more flights depart on time,” Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Tully said in a statement on Wednesday (5/8).
She added, “You only pay for what you need. Travelling with less means paying less, and you can always add services if required.”
The policy has drawn attention because additional fees for baggage, seat selection, and priority services are a key revenue source for low-cost carriers. Several consumer groups argue that the base fares offered by airlines do not yet reflect the overall cost of travel.
A spokesperson for Australian Federal Transport Minister Catherine King urged airlines to disclose all additional charges transparently at the time of ticket purchase so passengers do not face unexpected costs at the airport. “Jetstar claims this change aims to keep fares affordable. They must prove that to passengers,” King said.
The new policy applies to all Jetstar Airways flights from 2 February 2027. Passengers who already hold tickets for travel after that date will receive a complimentary Priority Carry-on upgrade. The change does not apply to flights operated by Jetstar Japan.
