Jembrana Haunted by 500 Dog Bite Cases Per Month, Vaccination Accelerated
Dog bite cases in Jembrana Regency continue to show worrying figures. On average, around 500 bite cases occur every month. In response to this situation, the Jembrana Regency Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Service has officially launched the 2026 Rabies Vaccination Campaign. This inaugural mass vaccination activity targets two areas simultaneously, namely Mendoyo Sub-district and Melaya Sub-district. “For the 2026 rabies vaccination campaign, today we have carried it out in two sub-districts, namely Mendoyo and Melaya,” stated the Head of Animal Health and Public Veterinary Health (Keswan-Kesmavet) of Jembrana, I Gusti Ngurah Putu Sugiarta, when confirmed by detikBali on Monday (13/4/2026). Sugiarta explained that the current rabies situation in Jembrana requires serious handling. From January to 13 April 2026, there have already been 21 confirmed positive rabies dog bite cases. These cases are evenly distributed across the five sub-districts in Jembrana. In efforts to build herd immunity, the government has set a high target for vaccination coverage this year. “In handling this, we are targeting a minimum mass vaccination coverage of 80 percent of the total dog population this year,” said Sugiarta. The field implementation of vaccination is divided into several teams. In Mendoyo Sub-district, the vaccination process started from Pohsanten Village involving a private team (A-Team). Meanwhile, in Melaya Sub-district, the activity was carried out by the regular government team targeting Candikusuma Village and Moding Village. Based on the latest estimation data, the dog population in Jembrana in 2026 is projected to reach 40,400 heads, slightly decreasing compared to 2025 which reached 41,625 heads. Regarding logistics availability, residents need not worry. Sugiarta assured that the current rabies vaccine stock is still sufficient to meet community needs. “Currently, the stock in Jembrana Regency reaches around 12,400 doses. The vaccine needs have been handled by the provincial government, so they are deemed sufficient for this year’s implementation,” said Sugiarta. In addition to support from the province, Jembrana also receives additional support from the regional budget. “Operational support is also obtained from APBD II which provides around 5,000 additional vaccine doses,” Sugiarta concluded.
