Jember DPRD Member Sentenced, Remains Silent While Smoking and Playing Online Games During Meeting
During the court session, Syahri wore a white safari shirt, cream-colored trousers, and a black peci. He sat upright behind a round table facing the panel of judges. Throughout the sentencing process, Syahri appeared fixated. His face was expressionless, with a blank stare directed forward. He offered no objections or defenses when the Gerindra Party’s Honorary Council declared him guilty of playing games and smoking during a Jember DPRD working meeting. Shortly after the session concluded and the panel left the room, Syahri, who had been sitting upright, leaned back in his chair. After the session, Syahri stated that he accepted the decision handed down to him. “I comply with the decision of the Party Tribunal. It’s a sanction. I regret it; I apologize for any mistakes I may have made. That’s all I can say. Thank you,” said Syahri. During the session, the Gerindra Party issued a final, stern warning to Syahri. “We hereby issue a stern and final warning to Mr. Ahmad Syahri As-Siddiq, a member of the Gerindra Party faction in the Jember Regency DPRD,” said the Chairman of the Gerindra Party’s Honorary Council, Fikrah Auliaurrahman, while reading the verdict on Friday. The Gerindra Party’s Honorary Council stated that Syahri had been proven to have violated the party’s Articles of Association and Bylaws (AD/ART). In decision number 05-004/PTS/MK.GERINDRA/2026, Syahri was found to have violated Article 16, paragraph 2 of the Gerindra Party’s AD, regarding the obligation to uphold the party’s name and honor. In addition, he was also deemed to have violated the cadre oath in Article 67, paragraph 5 of the Gerindra Party’s AD, which regulates the obligation to maintain the party’s honor, dignity, and solidarity. The panel also assessed that Syahri’s actions were in conflict with Article 68 of the AD concerning the identity of party cadres, which requires cadres to be polite, disciplined, and humble in their daily lives. “If in the future, Mr. Ahmad Syahri As-Siddiq repeats the violation, he will be immediately subject to the sanction of dismissal as a member of the Jember Regency DPRD,” said Fikrah. Syahri underwent an ethics hearing after a video of him playing games and smoking during a Jember DPRD meeting went viral on social media. In the viral video, Syahri was seen playing a game, allegedly Clash of Clans, while holding a cigarette during the meeting. The incident occurred when Commission D of the Jember DPRD held a hearing with the Health, Population Control, and Family Planning Office, BPJS Kesehatan, the Social Service, and representatives from 15 community health centers on Monday (May 11, 2026). The Chairman of the Jember DPRD, Ahmad Halim, had previously conveyed an apology for the actions of the council member. “On behalf of the leadership of the DPRD, we apologize, and we will process this because it also concerns the ethics of the institution,” said Halim on Tuesday (May 12, 2026). According to Halim, the case will also be processed through the Jember DPRD’s Honorary Council because it is considered not to reflect the ethics and discipline of a legislative member.
