The Jelekong area in Bandung Regency, West Java, has the potential to become one of the sites for developing a Waste-to-Electricity Power Plant (PSEL) in the Bandung Raya region. This opportunity arose following the initial assessment by the Ministry of Environment (KLH), which deemed the area technically viable.

However, the location determination process cannot be rushed, as it still requires several further stages.

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan explained that the Bandung City Government (Pemkot) must still coordinate with various parties, including the provincial government and the Bandung Regency Government (Pemkab), accompanied by advanced technical surveys.

“Indeed, based on the initial review from the Minister of Environment, Jelekong is considered feasible. But we still need to confirm it through cross-government discussions and technical surveys to obtain an official recommendation,” he stated in Bandung on Tuesday (31/3/2026).

Farhan assured that communication with Pemkab Bandung has been conducted and will continue. In the near future, further discussion agendas are scheduled in Jakarta and Bandung to refine the project development plans.

In addition to technical aspects, the government is also beginning to anticipate potential social impacts that may arise in the surrounding community.

“There is potential for social conflict, which is why we must prepare special access from Tegalluar to Jelekong so as not to disrupt residents’ activities,” he said.

According to Farhan, building access infrastructure to the site is a crucial aspect to ensure the optimal operation of the PSEL in the future without causing disturbances to the environment or community activities.

“Infrastructure development is crucial to ensure PSEL operations do not cause negative impacts on the surrounding environment,” he emphasised.

The Bandung Raya PSEL development plan is expected to become one of the long-term solutions for waste management while supporting the utilisation of alternative energy based on waste.
