Jeffer surprises under-the-weather Hoyer-Larsen

By Primastuti Handayani

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Jeffer Rosobin, with the help of a
dodgy burger, caused another upset yesterday by eliminating
Olympic gold medalist Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen on the second day of
the round-robin matches in the Sanyo World Cup Badminton
Championship.

Fung Permadi, an Indonesian shuttler who plays for China
Taipei, lost to old hand Darren Hall of Great Britain 15-12, 4-
15, 10-15. Fung won the World Grand Prix title in Bali last week.

Local shuttler Alan Budikusuma, the 1992 Olympic gold
medalist, easily beat Oliver Pongratz of Germany 15-8, 15-2.

Unseeded Jeffer, who replaced senior Hariyanto Arby, beat the
31-year-old Dane 14-17, 15-6, 15-5 to go through to the
semifinals of the US$190,000 tournament.

Hoyer-Larsen led 9-5 in the first set before he started to
make unforced errors. His backhands and over-the-head strokes
kept hitting the net, which enabled the 20-year-old Indonesian to
level the score at 12-12.

But experience saved Hoyer-Larsen in the setting as he
concluded the first set 17-14.

But in the second and third sets, Jeffer, who beat Lee Kwan-
jin of South Korea Wednesday, started to push his opponent away
or pull him into the net before winning 15-6, 15-5 in the 60-
minute match.

"I could have won the first set but I rushed myself to end it
quickly. I waited for his smashes because I played defensively
and I always earned points from it," he said.

Hoyer-Larsen blamed a stomach problem as the reason for losing
to a rookie.

"I had a stomach problem. It's not because of Indonesian food
but the McDonald's I ate last night," he said.

In group A, Fung, who also lost to Pang Chen of Malaysia
Wednesday, cannot qualify for the semifinals.

Fung's match against Chen Gang of China today is irrelevant as
he cannot qualify for the semifinals.

Chen, who beat Pang 15-7, 15-5 yesterday, has the biggest
chance of qualifying from his group after his two wins.

Alan, who is in group C, has to overcome Chinese Dong Jiong
today, who beat Soren B Nielsen of Denmark 15-10, 15-3 yesterday.

Whoever wins the match between Alan and Dong will go through
to the semifinals.

Indonesia's mixed doubles Flandy Limpele/Risyeu Rosalina beat
Nick Ponting/Joanne Goode of Great Britain 15-13, 15-7 in their
first match yesterday.

The organizers said that four Danish shuttlers were unable to
play yesterday as they suffered stomach problems allegedly after
eating burgers from the McDonalds outlet in the Sarinah Building
on Jl. MH Thamrin.

Mixed doubles Thomas Stavngaard/Ann Jorgensen, men's singles
Martin Lundgaard Hansen and women's single Camilla Martin
conceded walkovers to their opponents.
