Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Rocket Explodes as Elon Musk Comments
Elon Musk commented after Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket exploded during an engine test at Cape Canaveral on Thursday evening. On his X account, Musk briefly responded: ‘Very unfortunate. Rockets are hard.’ The comment is notable given Blue Origin, owned by Jeff Bezos, is a major competitor to SpaceX in the commercial space launch industry. The explosion occurred during a hot-fire test, which is testing the rocket engine on the ground while the vehicle remains mounted on the launch pad. Bezos confirmed all personnel were safe, adding: ‘It’s too early to know the root cause, but we are working to find out. It was a tough day, but we will rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and fly again.’ Brevard County Emergency Management described the incident as an ‘anomaly’ and assured no threat to the public. Blue Origin warned that debris could reach nearby beaches in the coming days or weeks and urged residents not to touch or approach any debris for safety. Cape Canaveral Space Force Station issued a similar warning, while the Federal Aviation Administration stated the incident was outside its licensed activities and had no impact on air traffic. The incident occurred as Blue Origin prepared for its next major mission. New Glenn was scheduled to carry 48 Amazon satellites for its Leo low Earth orbit internet service in the coming weeks. Amazon confirmed the satellites were not yet installed on the rocket and are safely stored nearby. The company added that New Glenn accounts for around 25% of over 100 launch schedules for the Leo satellite internet project. The company still has four other rockets in the launch manifest, allowing satellite deployment to continue while awaiting New Glenn’s return to service.
