Jeep Gladiator fire leads to consumer lawsuit

The Jeep Gladiator has once again become embroiled in a serious problem, after a 2022 Gladiator in Illinois, United States, caught fire while parked in front of a house, causing damage to the building.

CarsCoops reported on Wednesday that the case is now before a federal court and highlights the issue of the power steering pump electrical connector that has since triggered a recall of more than one million Jeep vehicles.

According to the chronology, Sandra and James Teuber leased the Jeep Gladiator in September 2022. On 5 July 2024, the vehicle was parked in front of their home in Bull Valley, Illinois, when James suddenly saw black smoke coming from the front of the house.

Upon inspection, the Gladiator was already engulfed in flames. The fire not only destroyed the vehicle and the belongings inside it, but also damaged the garage door and part of the house’s trim.

The Teuber family subsequently sued FCA US on a number of legal grounds, including product liability, negligence, breach of warranty and alleged consumer fraud.

FCA had attempted to take the matter to arbitration, but a federal judge rejected the move.

What makes the case even more damaging for Jeep is that the suspected cause of the fire is now linked to a large-scale recall.

In June 2026, FCA recalled 1,076,999 units of the 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator due to a problem with the electrical connector on the electro-hydraulic power steering pump wiring.

The high-resistance connector has the potential to overheat and ignite flammable materials nearby, even when the vehicle is switched off.

Owners of affected vehicles have been asked to park their Jeeps outdoors and away from buildings until repairs are carried out.

Ironically, for the Teuber family, that warning only emerged around two years after their Gladiator caught fire.

However, all the allegations in the lawsuit still have to be proven through the legal process.
