A single-vehicle accident involving a tourist jeep on the extreme S-shaped descent route in Wonokitri village, Mount Bromo, Pasuruan, on Friday, 29 May 2026, has once again served as a stark warning for the tourism and road safety sectors. The fatal incident resulted in two deaths, with both victims reportedly thrown from the vehicle cabin after the jeep lost control and crashed into a cliff. In response, Sony Susmana, Training Director at Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), stressed that comprehensive reforms to the jeep tourism ecosystem in extreme natural environments can no longer be delayed. Sony explained that lapses in safety oversight carry extremely high stakes—not only in terms of lives, but also the reputation of the national tourist destination itself. ‘The consequences of accidents are severe; a destination’s reputation can be damaged, affecting tourists’ trust in returning—especially for those with more rugged terrain,’ he said. ‘Tourists expect safety and a pleasant experience; the rest is the responsibility of the operators, as the jeeps are officially recognised by internal authorities,’ Sony said. Psychological factors on-site often lead to fatal outcomes. A cheerful or euphoric atmosphere among passengers inside the cabin frequently influences drivers’ behaviour on challenging routes. ‘Passenger activities and euphoria, which sometimes heighten the mood, can cause drivers to become overenthusiastic and aggressive behind the wheel. This is dangerous!’ he added. Therefore, Sony emphasised the importance of mental training for jeep tour operators. Proficient driving skills must be complemented by mature conduct when transporting passengers. ‘It all comes down to drivers’ ability to control themselves and their emotions. This needs to be overhauled,’ he said.
