Jakarta (ANTARA) - President of the Justice and Democracy Forum (JDF) Asia Pacific, Jazuli Juwaini, has strongly condemned the attack on United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeeping forces that resulted in the death of an Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) soldier.

In his statement in Jakarta on Monday, Jazuli explained that the attack on UNIFIL forces cannot be justified under any circumstances and indicates Israel’s lack of seriousness in committing to peace.

“UNIFIL forces are in Lebanon under the official mandate of the United Nations to maintain stability and peace. Attacking them is a serious violation of international law and must be firmly addressed,” he said.

Reflecting on the incident, Jazuli warned that allowing it to go unpunished would create a dangerous precedent and weaken the credibility of the global security system.

He suggested that the Indonesian government take a firm and proactive stance by bringing the matter to the UN Security Council.

“Indonesia must be at the forefront in advocating for international justice and ensuring that violations against peacekeeping missions are not left without consequences,” he stated.

According to him, JDF Asia Pacific also extends deep condolences to the victims and their bereaved families, as well as full solidarity to all UNIFIL personnel carrying out the noble task of maintaining world peace.

To that end, Jazuli said, JDF Asia Pacific urges the UN and the international community to strongly condemn the attack without exception and conduct an independent and transparent investigation.

Furthermore, impose firm sanctions on the responsible party, namely Israel, and ensure maximum protection for all peacekeeping personnel.

Previously, the Ministry of Defence (Kemhan) confirmed that one TNI personnel serving with the UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in Lebanon was killed and three others injured due to an artillery attack from Israel on Sunday (29/3).

“There are casualties from TNI soldiers, namely one deceased, one in serious condition with injuries, and two with minor injuries who are currently receiving medical treatment,” said the Head of the Defence Information Bureau (Karo Infohan) of the Secretariat General of Kemhan, Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, when confirmed by ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday.

Rico explained that the incident occurred due to escalating conflict in the Lebanon region, particularly in southern Lebanon.
