JD Vance Says US Will Not Attack Iran Again Unless There Is a 'Clear Reason'

US Vice President JD Vance has assured that President Donald Trump will not recommence military operations in Iran unless there is a clear objective. “What I can guarantee is that the president will not redeploy our personnel unless it is deemed necessary,” Vance said on Wednesday. He warned that any attempt by Tehran to restart its nuclear programme or attack commercial vessels would force Washington to alter its strategy. Vance also confirmed that negotiations in Doha, Qatar, are proceeding smoothly, with Washington engaging in dialogue with “good intentions”. “We will certainly strive to give these negotiations the greatest possible chance of success,” he said. In June, the US and Iran agreed on a memorandum of understanding to permanently end the war that had been ongoing since February, subsequently reopening shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and ending the US blockade of Iranian ports. Negotiations for a final agreement between the US and Iran, which will include Iran’s nuclear programme, are still ongoing. The Vice President also commented on Iran’s internal politics, claiming that many in Tehran now recognise the “mistakes” of governance over recent decades. “We think we are seeing momentum among people there who are trying to turn a new page,” he said, while acknowledging that some factions still cling to the “old ways”. Previously, President Trump stated that the denuclearisation process in Iran was “going well” with the presence of his special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, in Doha. Despite the White House’s optimism about the negotiations, Tehran has officially denied any scheduled direct meetings with US representatives. Iran insists that any dialogue with the US is conducted through intermediaries.
