The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) came under heavy pressure at the opening of trading on Thursday, 16 October 2026. The index plunged 8.01%, prompting the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) to temporarily halt share trading.

The JCI fell 469.86 points to 5,393.92 at the start of trading. The decline exceeded the 8% threshold that triggers a temporary trading halt on the exchange.

The IDX imposed the trading halt through the Jakarta Automated Trading System (JATS) at 9am Western Indonesian Time. Trading was scheduled to resume at around 9.30am, with no change to the trading schedule.

Blue-chip shares also came under pressure. The LQ45 index, which tracks the performance of 45 leading stocks, fell 49.14 points, or 8.33%, to 540.95.

The temporary halt was imposed under IDX rules for a sharp decline in the JCI during a single trading day. The measure gives investors time to consider available information before deciding on their investment strategies.

IDX trading-halt rules

The IDX has a trading-halt mechanism to address significant falls in the JCI. The rules set out the exchange’s response according to the scale of the index’s decline during the same trading day.

The stages of trading suspension under the rules announced by the IDX are:

  • If the JCI falls by more than 8%, trading is temporarily halted for 30 minutes.

  • If the JCI falls further, by more than 15%, the IDX imposes another 30-minute trading halt.

  • If the JCI decline exceeds 20%, and the fall continues, the IDX suspends trading until the end of the session or for more than one trading session, subject to approval or an order from the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

Under this mechanism, trading can be halted in stages if pressure on the JCI deepens.

A trading halt temporarily stops trading for a specified period. A trading suspension, by contrast, may last until the end of the session or for more than one session, in accordance with the applicable rules and with OJK approval or direction.

Purpose of the revised trading-halt rules

The IDX said the revised provisions for implementing trading halts are intended to give investors greater scope for liquidity as they determine their investment strategies.
