JCI Closes 0.9% Higher
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) ended today’s trading in positive territory. It stood at 5,328.36, up 49.47 points, or 0.94%, from its previous close of 5,278.89.
The index’s movements throughout the day were dramatic. The JCI opened at 5,310.85 before coming under pressure and touching an intraday low of 5,185.36 at around 10.30am Western Indonesia Time. It then gradually recovered, strengthening through to midday. Gains became more pronounced in the second session, as the index broke through 5,300 and reached its intraday high of 5,328.36 — also its closing level. The day’s trading range was therefore about 143 points.
The reversal contrasted with the first session, when the JCI had fallen 0.84% to 5,234.36, after earlier dropping 1.31% to 5,209.5 in the morning.
Trading volume was 299.97 million lots, with a transaction value of Rp15,882.28 billion. Foreign investors bought Rp6.1 trillion and sold Rp6.7 trillion, resulting in net foreign selling of about Rp0.6 trillion. There were 1,827,719 transactions.
Market participants are expected to continue monitoring the responses of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), the government and Danantara to the MSCI announcement, share buybacks by several conglomerate issuers, and President Prabowo Subianto’s call for stronger enforcement of capital-market rules.
Indonesia’s financial markets on Wednesday (21 October 2026) remained under the influence of several important domestic and international factors. Investors’ main focus was on Bank Indonesia’s (BI) interest-rate announcement due today.
Overseas, China’s central bank again held interest rates steady, while the release of UK employment data also shaped market sentiment.
The shadow of MSCI has yet to fully recede. Concerns that Indonesia could be downgraded from Emerging Market to Standalone Market were the main trigger for last week’s heavy sell-off. The market is now awaiting Danantara’s share purchases and watching whether the rally in state-owned company stocks can continue.
