Jayapura General Hospital Prepares Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist Education Programme
Jayapura — Jayapura General Hospital (RSUD) is currently preparing to open a hospital-based Specialist Medical Education Programme (PPDS) in obstetrics and gynaecology as an effort to accelerate the fulfilment of specialist doctor positions across Papua.
Hermanus Suhartono, Head of the Education Functional Unit at RSUD Jayapura, stated in Jayapura on Friday that the need for specialist doctors in Papua remains substantial, as several districts still lack such specialised personnel.
“In Papua Province alone, there are still four districts without specialist doctors, and recruiting specialists will be our first priority,” he said following a meeting with Papua Governor Mathius D Fakhiri in Jayapura on Friday.
According to Hermanus, the plan to open an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist education programme—the first of its kind at RSUD Jayapura based at the hospital—is much needed.
“In the initial phase, the programme to be opened will be specialist education in obstetrics and gynaecology,” he stated.
He explained that subsequently, in the following period, specialist education programmes in surgery, paediatrics, and internal medicine are planned to follow.
“For this reason, RSUD Jayapura is expected to become the primary teaching hospital in Papua Province, serving various healthcare education centres, ranging from medicine to medical support personnel,” he said.
He added that the target for the programme launch is April, with partner university Gadjah Mada University (UGM). The opening is also planned to be conducted directly by the Governor together with the recruited student participants.
“We hope that the hospital-based education programme will also create opportunities for local residents to pursue specialist medical education without having to leave Papua,” he said.
