Javanese traffic death toll rises

SURABAYA: A family of three were killed instantly when their motorbike was crushed by an inter-city bus, run by Sumber Kencono Lines, in Kertosono district, Nganjuk, East Java on Tuesday.

Local police Kamdani confirmed the incident, and added that an unruly mob of villagers attacked and burned the bus. It was not clear if any of the bus passengers burned as well.

The three casualties were identified as Prapto, 40, Prapto's wife Pranti, 35, and their daughter Dita, 8. They hailed from Klonung village, Slawung, in the regency of Ponorogo.

Kamdani said Prapto, his wife, and daughter were riding a motorbike and were about to overtake a car when the bus hit them from the opposite direction.

Unable to control their motorbike, Prapto and his family hit the pavement and were run over by the bus.

In the holiday rush to go back to villages, there have been several traffic accident fatalities. --Antara
